Climate Change (is real)
Many believe that climate change will be the defining issue of this generation. While the full effects of global warming are not entirely known, scientists and climatologists have warned that rising sea levels, greater food insecurity, and increased conflicts over water and other invaluable natural resources have the potential to create political, social, and economic havoc. Contributing factors of increased air pollution and deforestation pose serious threats to the health and survival of communities around the world. As the scale of natural disasters intensifies, climate refugees may join the millions of migrants already crossing borders. In December 2015, world leaders committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions to avoid the dangerous consequences of global warming. But with the recent United States decision to pull out of the Paris Climate Agreement, concerns for the fate of the planet—and the quality of life on it—have grown. While mitigating climate change will require curbing carbon emissions, shifting to renewable forms of energy, and confronting unsustainable consumption, entrenched interests and climate change deniers stand in the way of solutions. How the world collectively decides to limit greenhouse gases and address climate change may define the quality of life—and death—on Earth for generations to come.
