At its core, #bodypositivity is the idea that all bodies are good bodies. The leaders of the movement have a simple aim: to put marginalized bodies—mostly those typically thought of as “plus size” or “fat”—front and center in mainstream media. Instead of viewing these words as an insult, body-positive activists strive to reclaim them, turning them into descriptive characteristics. Advertisers eager to jump on the #bodypositive bandwagon have come under fire for featuring thin, mainly white women models in their campaigns. Some believe this misrepresentation of the message has gone too far, butchering the original intention and making #bodypositivity less impactful than it once was.
