#BlackLivesMatter has become synonymous with larger struggles against police brutality, systemic racism, and violence against African American people .#BlackLivesMatter embraces intersectionality and specifically sees the movement as going beyond the extrajudicial killings of black people while affirming the value of black women as well as queer, trans, undocumented, previously incarcerated, and disabled people. A decentralized, nonhierarchical movement,#BlackLivesMatter has become a catalyst for public outrage at state violence and systemic racism. The movement has sparked grassroots activism across the United States, inspiring international actions, and garnering high-profile support from artists and athletes. Founded after the acquittal of George Zimmerman for the murder of Trayvon Martin, #BlackLivesMatter became a household name following the highly publicized 2014 police killing of Michael Brown and the subsequent uprising in Ferguson, Missouri. Since, the movement has been at the forefront of protests and demonstrations against police violence, employing direct action tactics and social media strategies. In 2016, the Movement for Black Lives, a coalition of more than 50 organizations, including Black Lives Matter, released a political platform aimed at the liberation of black communities. The platform details six main demands: (1) end the war on black people, (2) reparations, (3) invest-divest, (4) economic justice, (5) community control, and (6) political power.
